About

I made the mistakes on my own money first.

River Cade Concepts is my company. Nearly everything in the portfolio is a business I own or a project I built, and that is on purpose — I wanted to learn this craft at my own expense before asking anyone to pay me for it.

What I knew before any of this

Two ideas, from two very different jobs.

Sales

Two things are irreplaceable: honesty, and a product that does the job.

Everything else is decoration. With both, you do not need tricks. Missing either, no amount of marketing covers it — it just buys you a shorter runway before the customer works it out.

Farming

Everything that lives here has to have a job.

A tool that does nothing, an animal that produces nothing, a page nobody acts on: it is the same problem wearing different clothes. It costs you to keep and returns nothing. On a farm you notice quickly. On a website most people never do.

Those two ideas are the whole method. Say what is true, build the thing that works, and make every piece earn its keep.

Why I started this

A crowded market that was not filling the need.

There is no shortage of people selling websites. There is a real shortage of people building something that keeps working after the invoice clears — where the site, the content, the search presence and the follow-up are one system instead of five purchases.

So I built what I could not find. Then I did the part most agencies skip.

The honest part

The portfolio is my own businesses, deliberately.

A farm. A brand that runs merchandise, editorial and media together. A dirt-work company. A consumer app. Three concept practices in categories the rest does not cover. Not one of them is an outside client, and every case study says so plainly.

I wanted to make the mistakes first — on my own ventures, with my own money, where the only person who paid for a bad decision was me. I would rather learn what does not work on a business I own than on a business you spent twenty years building.

I kept going until I saw results I could point at rather than describe. I am not finished, and I do not expect to be — an outside client will teach me things my own businesses never could. But what you would be buying has already been run in daylight, and you can open every piece of it right now.

The work

Every one of them is live.

Open any of these. If the work does not hold up, none of the rest of this page matters.

Concept projects — businesses we invented so we could design them

Where the farm idea went

Everything having a job is also the system.

Mike Shaner on a telephone in an empty brick-and-timber hall.

If every part has to earn its keep, then the parts should feed each other. An article should answer a real question and also be the thing an assistant quotes. A case study should prove capability and also carry the search terms a buyer actually types. A scan should be genuinely useful to a stranger and also start a conversation.

That is the closed loop, and it is the reason this studio builds a system rather than a set of deliverables.

Plainly

I intend to build the most successful independent agency in the world.

That is an absurd thing to write down, and I am writing it down anyway. The only route to it that exists is doing everything possible to make sure you get where you are going. Not a slogan — the actual mechanism. There is no version of that goal I reach without a long line of businesses behind me that did better because of the work.
